Kitaibelia (ISSN 2064-4507 - online; ISSN 1219-9672 - print) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes original research articles on floristics, phytogeography, plant systematics, nomenclature, conservation, plant ecology, vegetation science, and the history of science, with a geographical focus on the Pannonian Ecoregion (Central Europe). Papers are published in English (with a Hungarian abstract) or in Hungarian (with an English abstract). The journal was founded in 1996 and is named in honour of Pál Kitaibel (1757–1817), an outstanding Hungarian botanist.

About the Recent Ranking of Kitaibelia
For the third consecutive year, Kitaibelia has
been ranked in the field of international scientific journals, based on
citation data from the Scopus database, as listed on the Scimago Journal
Rankings site. We are pleased to report that the journal has maintained its
position from the previous year in both categories. It ranked 228th out of 553
journals in the Plant Science discipline, placing it in the 2nd quartile (Q2).
In the Ecology, Evolution, Behaviour and Systematics category, it ranked 351st
out of 739 journals, also placing it in Q2. Additionally, in the Agricultural
and Biological Sciences category, it ranked 1137th out of 2570 journals (also
in Q2).

This ranking provides valuable data for further
analysis, and we will now share some key figures.
The Scopus database, based on citations from the
previous year, includes a total of 117 scientific journals published in
Hungary. Of these, 12 are ranked Q1, 33 are ranked Q2, 39 are ranked Q3, 32 are
ranked Q4, and one journal has not yet been assigned a quartile. Among
Hungarian journals, Kitaibelia
is ranked 14th in terms of its SJR (SCImago Journal Rank) value.
Scimago also estimates the value of journals and
the APC (Article Processing Charge) for articles published in them (the APC is
the amount that authors and their affiliated organisations must pay to publish
an article in journals following the Gold Open Access model). The value of Kitaibelia is
increasing: it was estimated at US$45,881 in 2022, US$96,190 in 2023, and
US$124,965 (approximately 46 million HUF) in 2024. The estimated APC for an
article was US$2,549 in 2022, US$2,748 in 2023, and US$2,777 (just over 1
million HUF) in 2024.
However, to reassure all parties, Kitaibelia also
follows a Diamond Open Access model. Authors are not required to pay for the
publication of their articles, which will be made freely accessible online as
soon as possible after the peer review, acceptance, and editing process. We
also intend to continue publishing printed booklets, which will typically be
released at the end of the year or in the first quarter of the following year.
Although Kitaibelia has made significant
progress, we acknowledge that our international collaborations and the
proportion of female authors remain areas for improvement. Most of our articles
are written by male authors from Hungary. We would like to emphasise that we
welcome manuscripts from outside Hungary (particularly from the Pannonian
Ecoregion), international collaborations, and manuscripts authored by women.
Manuscripts will be evaluated solely on their scientific quality, novelty,
significance, and potential impact.
We would like to express our gratitude to the
authors, reviewers, and members of both the Editorial and Advisory Boards for
their invaluable contributions to the journal.
